Mindset

Meditation may not be for you.

Meditation may not be for you.

Meditation may not be for you.

Maybe meditation isn’t about sitting still. It’s about finding your way back to yourself.

Maybe meditation isn’t about sitting still. It’s about finding your way back to yourself.

2 minutes

I tried to sit in one place and meditate for years. Cross-legged. Eyes closed. Deep breaths. It was somewhat useful, but it never quite felt like me.

I have a lot of fire energy. And the more I forced myself to sit still for long hours, the more it sometimes felt like I was suppressing this beautiful energy instead of learning how to harness it.

Instead, I started listening to my body. What felt good in my body and, eventually, felt good in my mind?

I found my silence, my release, and my meditation through movement!

So this is what meditation looked like for me:

  • It looked like crazy dancing in the living room with the volume turned up.

  • It looked like running with music on.

  • It looked like learning how to swim and slowly relaxing into the water, letting it carry my weight and trusting that I wouldn’t drown.

  • It looked like working out at the gym, alone.

  • It looked like going for long walks, alone.

Meditation is about building a relationship with yourself, and there isn't only one way to do it. For some people, that might come through sitting cross-legged with their eyes closed. For someone else, it might mean swimming, dancing, running, walking, creating, or simply sitting somewhere and watching the world go by.

And if you've tried meditation and thought, This just isn't for me, maybe the practice isn't the problem.

Maybe you just haven't found your way in yet.
